Beginner Friendly? Liquid Eyeliner Showdown - Clarins vs. Colormates

Drugstore versus high end… the constant battle when it comes to buying makeup! As someone who has yet to master the perfect winged eyeliner, yet loves to find a nice, bold black liner, I knew I had to do a comparison between two liquid liners I had: one from Clarins (high end), and another from Colormates (drugstore).

Here are some of the thoughts I had when comparing the 2:
1. LOWER LASHLINE: You have to be careful with Clarins because a lot comes out. Meanwhile, Colormates allows you to build up a bit more in case you mess up.
2. UPPER EYELID: Both Clarins and colormates work well. Clarins gives a much darker, more bold line with fewer strokes, while the Colormates liner has to be built up, but can be beneficial for beginners who make a mistake with the first stroke.
3. PERFECTING THE WING: At the end, if you don't like the wing, it's kind of hard to fix or fade out the Clarins wing even with your fingers/fingernails because it's so dark. The Colormates, on the other hand, can be fixed easier, and then built upon to create a darker line.

All in all, my personal preference would be the Colormates just because it seems a bit more user friendly for a novice like me. Once I master the art of a perfect wing (which won't happen until my hands are trained to be super steady), I’m sure I’ll gravitate more towards the darker and bolder Clarins!

I stick with kat von d's tattoo eyeliner I think it's the best and has a cute little star at the end so you can give your self a little star print on your eyes. I love the cat eye looks for eye liner

I'm still just old school when it comes to liner...I've got 10 or 15 different kinds...depending on my mood, where I'm heading, what I'm doing....I like Sugar in the color black out..For my lower line and girlactik for my upper line

Awesome video, I have always wanted to learn to try new eyeliner techniques I am afraid to say I am still only applying my liner the same way I did when I learned to apply it when I was back in Junior High, oh so many years ago that was..LoL This video has taught me you can teach an old gal new tricks (techniques)!!

You are so brave! I stay away from eyeliners! I can't make them work no matter the format! I just use eyeshadow and blend a little.

They both look nice. You did a great job. My favorite eyeliner is L'Oreal Paris Flash Cat Eye liquid liner. I like to do a simple either on the water line or above the eyelid. I'd like to try and master the winged eyeliner. I guess a tip would be to use very little each time and start with that because sometimes it can smudge and make it worse.

🌺🌺I love liquid liner by Nyx. It is easy to use and there is a lot of the product in the bottle. It makes it really easy to make the wings. This was a great review! Thanks! 🌺🌺

Liquid eyeliner is my favorite too! Currently I'm using Kaleido Cosmetics in Obsidian. It goes on easily and quickly. I just do the upper lids because I always mess the lower ones up lol. I would love to master a cat eye but right now it's plain Jane for me.

I've always loved liquid liner cause it's so much bolder but suck at applying it I honestly love youniques pencil eyeliner myself it's easy to apply and doesn't take 100 coats

I have used liquid eyeliner for years. I like the way it rolls on and if you by the right kind which I prefer waterproof stays on longer. I have using Kat Von D eyeliner for the past 3 years and I really enjoy wearing it. Sure I still. have a few miss here and there but they are easy to repair. I always put the wing in. I have large eyes and I consider one of my assets . Try and try again you will get the hang of it. I learned anyone can.

I chose Colormates eyeliner for a beautiful finished look upper and lower lids. Eyes pop and look alive with eye liners of any shade. Good looks and very helpful review!

  • Danielle

I only use liquid eye liner. It is easy to apply after you get used to it!

  • Jen

Nice! I'm a little afraid to try liquid liner lol. I usually use sticks. I also like a little bit of a wing, but I don't like when it goes too far out.

Great job. I am really have a hard time with using eyeliner. I seldom try to master the use. Would like to learn how to use eyeliner.

Great job! My money would have been on Clarins being better, but that is not the case here. The ONLY eyeliner I use is KatVonDee Tattoo Eyeliner in Trooper Black. It is by far the absolute BEST eyeliner ever! It's so easy to use, it takes me about 2 minutes to do both my eyes. It is easy to make the line thicker or thinner, depending on what look you want to achieve. The only eye look I really wear is a cat eye flick. And KVD is perfect for it! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants the most out of their liquid eyeliner.

That was awesome! I vote Colormates! I agree with you, there's more control although I don't think it's a beginner think, the Clarins was just very clumpy coming out. It was darker and bolder though.

  • Bonita kasee
