🎤 Who Is Kali Uchis? 🎤
Karly-Marina Loaiza, known under the pen name of Kali Uchis, is an American Singer. The 27-year-old hails from Alexandria, Virginia. Her hit career began in 2012 when she dropped a mixtape that impressed the music industry's most powerful.
But Kali hasn't only received recognition for her music—which I am a fan of, by the way. Kali quickly made a name for herself in the fashion and beauty industries as well.
Her looks are heavily inspired by 90s trends. I love her intensely smokey eye and winged liner. She also has stunning lips that she two tones with a liner and contrasting lipstick. 💋
I have been so excited to create this Kali Uchis makeup tutorial for you all. This might be one of my favorite Kali Uchis looks.
In this guide, I'll be walking you through how to recreate the smokey eye look that she often has in her music videos and Instagram posts. Follow along below!
💗 How to Achieve the Look 💗
It is a more refined look with lots of emphasis on smokey eyes and the perfect pout. I've divided the makeup tutorial into steps based on face regions to simplify things.
I'm doing things a bit differently for this look. Instead of starting with the skin, I'll start with the eyes. They are the star of this look, so this is the area I'll concentrate on first.
1️⃣ Start by applying a concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone all over your eyelids. This will act as a browbone highlight and eyeshadow primer.
2️⃣ I then go in with a brush to blend it out. It does look ghostly at first but trust the process!
3️⃣ Make sure to draw the concealer across the bridge of your nose, too.
4️⃣ Then I'm using my Witchy Warms Eyeshadow Palette by HIPDOT ($18) to add density to my eyelids.
5️⃣ I use the "Unknown" color all over the lid first—this is a toffee brown matte, so it has no shimmer.
6️⃣ Then I create a winged shape on the eyelid with a soft brush using the Walnaza shade from the Warrior 2 Eyeshadow Palette by Juvia's Place ($20).
7️⃣ Kali always has falsies on! So the next step is to add my 3D Faux Mink lashes by Cherimoya to add some drama.
8️⃣ Finishing the eyes, I just brushed and shaped them—keeping them very defined (as was commonly done in the 90s)—and filled in the sparse spots with a matching pencil.
The eyes are nearly done; I'll touch them up in the end. I like to remove any eyeshadow that fell onto my undereye before moving on to my face.
Her makeup looks always features clear contoured skin. I also like to get into character, so I'll add some matching beauty marks, too.
1️⃣ After applying my moisturizer and sunscreen, I use my NYX Foundation to create a seamless base.
2️⃣ Now I apply a bright concealer under my eyes.
3️⃣ Then to create Kali Uchis's famous contour. I like to use a large soft brush and apply a peachy bronzer on a three shape on both sides of my face while making a little fish face.
4️⃣ Kali wears a lot of blush, so I'm going heavy with the pink blush on the apples of my cheeks. I recommend a powder blush for this look.
5️⃣ Using a liquid eyeliner I added Kalis beauty marks, three on the right cheek and one on the left.
6️⃣ Then, to finish, I add some concealer and highlight the top of my nose.
It's coming together now! I went back to finish my eyes after completing my face makeup. To finish the eyes, just add some black eyeshadow using a soft eyeliner brush tracing the outline of your undereye.
Make sure to connect it to the wing of your eyeshadow!
Kalis's lips remind me of moguls like Edith Piaf and 90s muses like Kate Moss and Tyra Banks. Kali Uchis's lips are a big part of her iconic makeup style.
She likes to line her lips with a darker shade than her lipstick, so that's what I'll show you to do here:
1️⃣ Line your entire lips with a dark red lipliner.
2️⃣ Follow with a lighter lipstick, and don't blend it with the lipliner.
3️⃣ Then, finish the lips with a reddish-brown gloss to complete the lips. Keep the gloss concentrated on the center of your lips to make them appear bigger.
The hair makes a difference for this look, so as a bonus, I'll walk you through how I created this 2000s-inspired hairstyle. You'll need three short bobby pins or micro hair clips for this look.
This style works best on straight hair, so start by flat ironing your hair. Make sure to use heat protection!
1️⃣ Grab a large section from the front of your crown and put it behind your right ear to create a dramatic side part.
2️⃣ Make three mini ponytails at the top of your head using a 1-inch width section of hair. Secure them with hair elastics.
3️⃣ Then, take about the one-inch width of hair right at the top of your head and make a mini bun with it. Secure it with a small bobby pin.
4️⃣ Do the same thing on the right and left center of your head, creating two more mini buns.
There you have it! It's so fun for a night out.
I love the combo of the dramatic smokey eye and the bold lip. It's also so cool to try a look that uses eyeshadow to create a winged look instead of eyeliner.💄
