As we head into the seventh night of Hanukkah 🕎 this year, tomorrow night, December 5, 2021 on the secular calendar or the 1st day of the month of Tevet on the Hebrew calendar (which is used to determine the dates of all Jewish ✡️ holidays, thus the reason they change from year to year), I thought I would give my friends here at Prism Pop, a closer look at what Hanukkah is. Hanukkah is about many things, some of which are explained in my post. For my family, like many, it’s about being with family, eating fried foods and as Tevye in “Fiddler On The Roof” shouted out “Tradition”! As children, my sister, little brother and I loved Hanukkah! We loved ❤️ my Mom or either of my Grandma’s or our Bubbe’s (Yiddish for Grandma, though she was actually our Great Grandma)making Latkes, mmm…😋😋😋‼️After our Hanukkah dinner, which in our home was usually my Mom’s heavenly brisket with carrots, lots of Latkes with applesauce and/or sour cream, and some green beans. The house house would smell so incredibly! My Mom would often bake something simple for dessert, like a Bundt cake. After dinner, but before dessert, we would get to play games with the dreidel and win the ultimate prize, chocolate “gelt” (gold foil covered small coins). Most Jewish kids loved Hanukkah though! It was fun and you didn’t have to go to synagogue and sit through hours of services with Hebrew prayers and Torah readings, which when you’re a child, you don’t understand. There was no weird-to-kids kind of food, just yummy stuff, and we got to eat chocolate as an official part of the holiday, it was a win-win! Well, I hope you learned a little something about Hanukkah. You’ll definitely want to try making Latkes! Once you’ve mastered making them (they’re actually very easy) with regular potatoes, then you’ve got to try the many variations out there, like sweet potato latkes, zucchini latkes, mini latkes etc. All to die for and all can be made vegetarian or vegan! They aren’t even that high in calories if you properly fry them and let the oil drain off afterwards. The recipe I provided is about 70 calories per latke! Now I can’t say the same thing for Sufganiyot, but hey 🤷🏼♀️, try a recipe anyway! I’ll admit, I’ve never made a donut before, but I know my Mother-in-Law & Husband would adore me if I ever try to(I’m not a big donut person myself?) What is your favorite holiday of the year? What particular family traditions do you enjoy and look forward to the most, in relation to a holiday? What is your favorite food from a holiday? I’d 💖it, if you would share your answers in the comments section below 👇🔽👇🔽👇🔽👇🔽👇🔽👇🔽👇🔽 Thank you for staying with me through this journey.
