A Quick Background About Cereals!
Let's back up to the beginning of the 1860s, before cereal. During this time, breakfast was a hearty meal that consisted of lots of meat and took time to prepare. Easy options didn't really exist.
In 1863, a vegetarian named James Caleb Jackson🧔🏻 forever changed the ideals of American breakfast. He created a low-preparation meal that could fill you up without adding meat.
The first cereal, Granula, came from dried and broken graham flour dough.🍪 To make it edible, people had to soak it in milk overnight,🥛 or else it could not be chewed.
Fortunately, Postum Cereal Company, now simply known as Post Foods, worked on perfecting this convenient and exciting treat. Cocoa Pebbles brings all of this to the table and more.

Cocoa Pebbles: Sweetened Crispy Rice Cereal🥣
In the early 1970s, Postum Cereal Company created Cocoa Pebbles. What are Cocoa Pebbles exactly?
This cereal consists of sweetened rice 🌾 cereal. Post added a chocolatey flavor to bring rice cereal to a whole new level.
Is the chocolate real? They do use real cocoa. But it also contains additives to supplement the chocolatey flavor.🍫
Cocoa Pebbles Fast Facts🍫
About the product 🥣🤎
Cocoa Pepples hit the shelf in 1971, and Postum Cereal Company made the beloved Flintstones the face of this brand. This made it the first cereal, along with Fruity Pebbles, to be created in conjunction with cartoon characters.
Both the flavor and these cartoon blasts from the past made this cereal something that would carry long into the future. It is selling strongly in grocery stores today!
If you’re wondering what flavors does this contain, it combines both natural and artificial flavors that will keep you coming back for more.
You can buy a family-sized box of it from Walmart for $4.48.
What about the taste, you ask? The flavor profile of this cereal will not disappoint you. 😍
Cocoa Pebbles offer a hint of sweetness without overpowering the tastebuds. They touch the palate with a slight chocolate flavor that's just enough to quiet your craving.
The rice chips remain crisp for a while in the milk. 🥛🥛 The cocoa powder seeps into the milk you eat, so you can finish your meal with a few sips of chocolate milk.
Key Decision Factors🛒🏷️
In this section, I will tell you the top five reasons that made me buy this product and helped me evaluate its quality in general.
Of course, I won’t just tell you that it’s a great cereal! I base my judgement on these factors:
Always pay attention to the food that goes into our bodies. This awareness helps us to create balance in our diets and avoid things individuals cannot eat.
The ingredients of Cocoa Pebbles include:
- Rice 🌾
- Hydrogenated vegetable oil (coconut and palm kernel oils) 🥥
- Cocoa (processed with alkali) 🤎
- Caramel color
- Artificial and natural flavor
When reading nutrition facts on your cereal box, understanding the item order helps. The first listed ingredient makes up most of the cereal and as you move down the list, you find less of each listed item.
2. Nutritional Benefits 🍫🥣
You can eat 31 grams of Cocoa Pebbles to only receive 110 calories and a gram and a half of fat. This makes it a good choice for weight watching, as long as you stick to the serving size.
Carbohydrates make up cereal. 🥣 This macronutrient provides the body with currency to create energy for our cells.
Though the natural ingredients themselves do not contain a wide array of nutrients, the manufacturer adds a good amount, making it similar to taking a multivitamin.
This cereal contains a number of vitamins and minerals, including:
- Niacinamide (B3)
- Reduced Iron
- Zinc Oxide
- Vitamin A Palmate
- Pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6)
- Thiamin mononitrate (B1)
- Riboflavin (B2)
- Folic acid (B9)
- Vitamin D3
- Vitamin B12
These vitamins offer kids and adults a good nutritional boost with something that tastes delicious. It makes getting in the daily recommended amounts quite simple.
3. Allergens 🍫🥣
People who suffer from food allergies often worry. Some allergens can cause a serious reaction that can even turn fatal.
Fortunately, this cereal does not contain any of the major allergens, including peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, and soy. This makes them a safe choice to make treats with for parties! 😌
4. Sugar Content
Do not grab this cereal for a low-sugar snack. It contains 12 grams of sugar per serving.
This gives you 25% of your recommended daily amount. Some sugary cereals do contain more, but it is up there for sugar content.
5. Other Dietary Considerations 🍫🍫🥣
People who live with celiac disease need to eat carbs with caution. Since this cereal does not contain any gluten, they can eat it up.✅
This cereal does not contain any dairy on its own. So anybody with a dairy allergy can also partake in a quick and tasty breakfast with rice or almond milk as a substitute.
Vegetarians can enjoy this tasty treat as well. Strict vegans, however, may want to stay away because of how some of the nutrients, like Vitamin D3, are sourced.
If you follow a ketogenic diet, then this would only work for you in moderation. The high carbohydrate content would quickly push you close to your daily limit. So consider this an indulgence for your diet.🤩
6. Versatility 🍫🍫🥣
Pebbles cereal can feel like a bowl of nostalgia in the morning. 🌅 But, sometimes we want to take it outside of the box.
Dry cereal stores well in Ziplock baggies and containers. It tastes good dry, so you can eat it on the go.👌
You can also get creative with this fun and delicious food! Create fun party snacks with a little preparation and a lot of imagination.🤩
Make Cocoa Pebble treats by adding melted butter, marshmallows, and a dash of vanilla to the cereal in a baking pan. You don't need to bake the treats and it takes very little time to prepare.
For a little pizazz, coat the top with raspberry jam. Chocolate lovers may opt for the decadence of a Nutella spread over top.
Cut the treats into squares and turn them into critters by making chocolate-dipped pretzel stick legs. Or, offer up all the toppings you can think of and let the kids create a delicious craft with their pebble treats.
7. Price 🍫🍫🥣
Consider the price premium. For $4.48, you can almost get two boxes of generic cereal.🤑
But, you get what you pay for with the taste and crispiness. Quality does match the price if you can afford to pay a little extra for breakfast.
Cocoa Pebbles: Pros 👍
✔️ Nutritional Content
The nutritional content of Cocoa Pebbles makes them a sound breakfast when compared with other brands.
✔️ Health Benefits
The vitamins and minerals it contains help with processes like cellular metabolism, nutrient absorption, oxygenating the body, and building the immune system. It’s also a tasty source of carbohydrates.
The Flintstones box creates wonderful nostalgia.
There’s a lot that you can do with this cereal! You can make it into fun party snacks by simply adding different toppings.
I love how Cocoa Pebbles offer a hint of sweetness and chocolate flavor without overpowering the tastebuds.
Cocoa Pebbles: Cons 👎
In order to pack the pebbles with nutrients and long-lasting taste, it goes through a lot of processing. In particular, BHT and caramel coloring, both raise concerns.
❌ Sugar Content
Cocoa Pebbles contain a high amount of sugar.
Most of the nutrients in this food get added in during processing. The body does not absorb these forms of nutrients as well as it does when they come from natural food sources.
The Competition 💪
In this section, I will tackle the other cereals that come close to Cocoa Pebbles and let’s see how they compare to each other in terms of taste, crunchiness, ingredients, and their pros and cons!
1. Cocoa Pebbles Vs. Cocoa Krispies 🍫🥣
When deciding on cereals, taste matters. For me, Cocoa Pebbles had a better chocolate flavor 🍫🍫 in comparison to Cocoa Krispies that had a bit of a subtle cocoa flavor.
Yes, both contain similar ingredients as they are both rice cereals made by different companies. But, Cocoa Krispies contain more added sugar than the alternative, making them a little too sweet.
Cocoa Krispies sink in the crisp test. Because they contain more pores, the milk makes them mushy much more quickly.👎
Pros & Cons Highlights
Pro: Cocoa Krispies snap, crackle, and pop like the original. 😍
Con: The flavor does not justify the higher sugar content. 👎
Review: ⭐ ⭐
2. Cocoa Pebbles Vs. Cocoa Puffs 🍫🥣
Cocoa Puffs won the taste test.👌 The perfectly balanced flavor paired with a perfect crunch makes them slightly more enjoyable. Instead of having an overpowering chocolate taste, Cocoa Puffs taste more like a sweetened cacao.🤤
On the flip side, the round shape makes them harder to chew and less crispier. This creates a choking hazard for children, which the cereal targets.
Unlike Cocoa Pebbles, Cocoa Puffs contain gluten since they are made with wheat and not rice. This may cause a problem for people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease.
Pros & Cons Highlights
Pro: I love the chocolate flavor of this one.🤎🥰 It’s not too sweet and still has the aftertaste of cacao. Although for some children, they might prefer that more chocolatey taste.
Con: The only downside of this is that it don’t suck up the milk when you mix it with that.😕 Kids can safely enjoy crispy rice cereals over these round puffs that can be a choking hazard. ⚠️
Review: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
3. Cocoa Pebbles Vs. Chocolate Frosted Flakes 🍫🥣
Chocolate Frosted Flakes taste too sweet. 😫 Their consistency does not help at all.
What I liked about Chocolate Frosted Flakes is that it remained crunchy even with the milk. 👍
Both kinds of cereal are highly processed with controversial ingredients. But Chocolate Frosted Flakes also contains food dyes, like red 40 and yellow 5, while Cocoa Pebbles does not.
Pros & Cons Highlights
Pro: Chocolate Frosted Flakes can instantly satisfy a sweet tooth.👍
Con: This cereal does not taste as good and contains more preservatives.👎

Cocoa Pebbles offers a quick breakfast that tastes good. It contains enough nutrients that it works as a sometimes snack.
Kids will love it and can safely eat it. Adults will also enjoy the flavor as well as the blast back to the past that reminds them of childhood.🤎🤎

I am a mother of three unique children and a grandson, each with their own preferences. We all enjoy Cocoa Pebbles cereal. And knowing the baby can eat it without choking makes life less stressful.
In college, I majored in Nutrition Management, so I understand food on many levels. And though nothing processed offers perfect nutrition, I think we all deserve a tasty treat from time to time! 💖
