👋 Hey there PrismPop Beauty's! Since I was a young girl around 12 years old, I became really interested in Piercings. From the basic Ear Piercing to crazy Facial or Body Piercings, I was mesmerized by them. My very first Facial Piercing was my Eyebrow Piercing when I was 12 years old. Long story short, that one was permanently ripped out on a Carnival ride.
Anywho. My most recent and favorite Piercing is my Septum Piercing. I wanted this one done for over 10 years but I was too scared to do it. I've had both sides of my nose pierced and they hurt more than any other Piercing that I got so I figured my Septum would hurt worse. Thank goodness I was wrong! I barely felt it.
🤓 Enough about my history, why don't we go back a bit further? Down below I'm going to spotlight the history of the Septum Piercing from different countries and sexes. Let's dive right in!
📚 The History of the Septum Jewelry! -
🔸️The oldest record or proof of Septum Piercings goes way back 5,300 years ago! A mummified human was found with their Septum Pierced. Kinda crazy, right?
🔸️The Septum piercings are the second most common type of piercing in “primitive” societies in Jaya, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. But it has also historically been practiced by Aboriginal Australians and North Native American tribes.
🔸️In history and in some tribes today, having or getting your Septum Pierced was a right of passage for men. It was a sign of a boy becoming a man. In certain tribes, the size of the Piercing was a sign of how fierce or deadly a warrior was.
🔸️Since the 1500's in Hinduism, nose piercing has been associated with marriage. It was a way to honor the goddess of marriage, Parvathi. A decorated septum ring is worn by the bride-to-be to show that they are engaged. When they are married it is often swapped out for a smaller more conservative septum ring to show that they are married.

🩹 Common Issues During Septum Piercing Healing -
▪️You can expect some mild tenderness at the tip of your nose over the first week or so, but nothing major.
▪️Allergic reactions. Some piercing jewelry, mainly those containing nickel can cause allergic reactions in some people. Be sure to disclose any allergies to the piercer beforehand.
▪️Infections. Openings in the skin can allow bacteria into your body and lead to infection. This can cause redness, swelling, pain, and pus or discharge. This is why keeping the area clean and following aftercare instructions is a must!
▪️Septal hematoma. A septal hematoma can develop if the piercing damages blood vessels and the tissue lining the cartilage, causing blood to collect between the two. This can cause pain, swelling, pressure, and congestion.
▪️Tearing and Scarring. Depending on the jewelry used, your bling could get caught or ~ouch~ torn out. This causes Scarring but it usually isn't visible. It can be incredibly uncomfortable and make changing your jewelry much harder.
❌️ Piercing Healing - Do NOT Do List!
• Don't touch or move your jewelry a lot because as it's healing, each time you disturb it it breaks the skin and starts the healing process over.
• Don't try to change your jewelry early! It can get infected or there's a huge chance you won't be able to get the new jewelry in.
• Don't use cheap jewelry! Make sure to at least ask if the jewelry has nickel in it. Surgical Steel is the best to use.
😇 Piercing Healing - Must Do List!
• Keep the entire area clean. This includes keeping your hands clean if you'll be touching your nasal area.
• Follow your Piercers directions fully for home care. Septum Piercings get infected very easily during your healing time.
🛍 Different Types Of Septum Jewelry -
1️⃣ Captive Bead Rings (CBR's) -
CBRs are great for septum piercings because they are so easy to use. You can choose a standard bead or opt for pearls, opals, or other fun bead styles. If you're looking for a bold, traditional look, CBRs are the way to go.
2️⃣ Clickers -
If you're looking for unique designs as well as comfort, then clicker rings are a great choice. The hinged mechanism makes it one of the easiest jewelry styles to wear. While the rest of the piece can feature a variety of different unique designs.
3️⃣ Seamless Rings -
Gold seamless rings are a favorite for a daintier look. If you prefer a subtle style, choose a seamless hoop that will sit flush against your septum for a look that's both cute and edgy.
4️⃣ Horseshoe Barbells -
Circular barbells offer a similar look as CBRs, but they don't form a full ring. Also referred to as horseshoe barbells, the two balls on the end make it a bold septum jewelry choice.
5️⃣ Cresent Pinchers -
This style is for those with larger septum piercings, or looking to stretch their septum. The crescent shape is secured on each side with an o-ring.
✅️ My Personal Experience With Each Type Of Septum Jewelry for Smiley Piercing -
To be honest, no matter which piercing I tried to put these in I never could get the ball to stay in between the two bars. Maybe it's because of my poor vision or cheap jewelry but either way I couldn't do it. You have to carefully squeeze the ball in between the bars without pushing it too far. I don't recommend these for anyone visually impaired.
Clickers have been my favorite type of jewelry for my Septum Piercing. They are super easy to put in and easy to lock in place. Depending on where your sweet spot is, you'll have to either get an 8-12mm piece of jewelry. Mine is a 10mm. If you try to wear a piece too small, the clasp will pop open all the time.
▪️Seamless Rings -
Seamless Rings are made in a couple different ways. My favorite type clasps in place pretty much the same as a Clicker. Once it's latched closed it looks seamless, like a complete circle. They are just as easy to get in and clasp as the Clicker. I just like the look of the Clicker but if you're wanting something more simple, I definitely recommend this kind.
Horseshoe Barbells are great too. You have to be careful which kind you're buying though. The internal threading kind SUCK! The pieces pop off so easily. Then the plastic type suck too because they fall apart all the time. I definitely recommend getting surgical steel or gold.
▪️Crescent Pinchers -
These are really great because you can flip them up inside your nose comfortably for work or school. My issue with them is that while I'm sleeping they can get caught on something and fall out. As long as you have good quality O-rings you should be okay though. I definitely recommend these too!

✅️ My Conclusion -
As I mentioned before, my Septum Piercing is my favorite one. It was also the hardest to get to heal. Mine got infected right away because I ended up hospitalized from Pneumonia right after I got it done. I think from the Oxygen tubes I had to wear but I'm not 100% sure. If you're interested in getting a Septum Piercing, make sure to do your research first. Maybe even try a fake one for a few days to see how much you really like it? Either way, they are a cute accessory for any anyone wanting one. I definitely recommend them. 👌
🙋♀️ Q's & A's -
⁉️ Question - What is the basic gage that Piercers use for Septum Jewelry for Smiley Piercing?
▪️Answer - Normally piercers use 16 gage needles and jewelry. You might be able to request a smaller gage depending on your piercer.
⁉️ Question - What do I do if my Septum Jewelry for Smiley Piercing gets infected?
▪️Answer - Depending on how infected it is, if it's really bothering you you can go to your doctors and see if they can treat it without removing the jewelry.
For me, I was able to just use antibiotic cream and I kept it really clean. It took much longer to heal and now I have Scar tissue too.
