Choosing a snack can be tricky. Do I want something salty? Sweet? Sour? Spicy? Now I could spend hours choosing just one… But I’d rather have it all. 😏
The original Pulparindo has been one of my favorite candies for years because it has such a unique flavor! 😍 It truly has a little bit of everything: it’s sweet, spicy, salty, sour, and tart!
When I saw that De La Rossa actually had four flavors of Pulparindo, I knew I had to do a taste test to find the ultimate flavor. 💯
Today we're putting the flavors: extra spicy, mango, original, and watermelon to the test!

🧐 What Is Pulparindo?
Pulparindo is a chewy candy made from the pulp of tamarinds and chili. A tamarind is a fruit that comes from a leguminous tree which has a tart, almost citrus-like flavor that becomes sweeter as it ripens. Pulparindo candy tastes very similar to an actual tamarind fruit!
The candy has a chewy and jelly-like consistency which you can mold inside your mouth. I find it really satisfying! And it’s coated in a thin layer of sugar and citric acid, adding a sweet and sour edge to the overall flavor.
The best part of a pulparindo? It’s completely vegan and gluten-free! 😍 Anyone and everyone can enjoy the fun mash-up of flavors.
🧐 Who Are De La Rosa?
Pulparindo is made by the brand De La Rosa–a famous Mexican candy brand. They began making their signature Mexican treats in 1942 and steadily expanded their range to include hundreds of unique and tasty snacks.
Product Fast Facts
⚡ Product name: Pulparindo
⚡ Product details: a chewy candy with a sweet, sour, and spicy flavor.
⚡ Price: $6.27 for a 20 pack 💰
⚡ Calories: 50 calories per piece
⚡ Ingredients:
- Sugar - to keep things sweet! Sugar also plays a role in the texture of candy.
- Tamarind Pulp - for the signature Pulparindo flavor. Tamarinds are a kind of legume that contain a high amount of tartaric acid. This gives the candy its range of sweet and sour taste.
- Corn Syrup - adds extra sweetness! It also prevents the sugar in the candy from crystalizing fully, creating a chewy texture.
- Iodized Salt - to enhance the candy’s flavor.
- Citric Acid - adds tartness and sourness to the candy.
- Sterilized Ground Guajillo Chili for the signature Pulparindo heat! Chili also compliments many fruit flavors.
- Sodium Benzoate - as a preservative to keep the candy fresh.
👩🔬The Testing Process
To compare the four different flavors, I used a very simple testing process: I ate them one at a time. Seriously, it’s important to not let the flavors mix in your mouth! So I drank lots of water and waited a while in between tasting each flavor. 💧⏰
I also made sure not to eat anything immediately before trying a candy flavor, because that could have completely altered the taste of the candy.
🤔 Key Decision Factors
When reviewing any sort of candy, there are six key factors that I consider. Looking at each of these six factors helps me make sure I’m judging each flavor fairly! ⚖️ These factors are:
🌟 Packaging
When considering the packaging, I want each piece to be easy to open. Does the wrapper stick to the candy? Does the packaging tell me about the different flavors available?
🌟 Key ingredients
Next, I look at the ingredients to make sure I’m not pumping weird chemicals into my body! Are the ingredients vegan and/or gluten-free? Do they contain controversial preservatives?
🌟 Retail price
Next, I don’t want to spend a fortune on a candy if I can spend a few dollars on something similar. Is the candy priced fairly? 💰
🌟 Calories
It’s important to me that the candy I eat isn’t too high in calories–mostly so I can have more of it! How many calories are in a serving? Is a serving big enough for me to enjoy the candy and feel satisfied afterward?
🌟 Taste
And lastly, does the candy taste good? 👅 The taste and flavor profile is the most important factor when reviewing candy!
🏃 It’s Competition Time!
Finally, let’s get reviewing! I’ve compiled my thoughts on each flavor and given each one an overall rating. And to be honest, the results surprised me…
🥭🧡 Pulparindo Mango
To be honest, Pulparindo Mango doesn't taste like mango at all! I enjoyed the flavor, but I don’t think it’s as good as the original!
🌶️❤️ Pulparindo Xspicy
I expected this to be hotter! Pulparindo Xspicy isn’t much more spicy than the original, but it does have a spicy aftertaste which is quite yummy. The texture is slightly rougher than the other flavors because each piece is covered in tajin.
🍉💚 Pulparindo Watermelon
Hands down, Pulparindo Watermelon is the best flavor. It tastes like juicy watermelon with the perfect amount of spice! It’s very similar to the original Pulparindo, but it has a better flavor.
I’d say the flavor is similar to the American Airhead candy–but with the extra spice that knocks it out of the park. ⚾
🍬💛 Pulparindo Original
Prior to this taste test, the Original Pulparindo was my firm favorite. It has the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, and is really satisfying to eat!

🏆 And The Winner Is…
Pulparindo Watermelon! Hands down, this is my favorite flavor. I love how the usually soft watermelon flavor comes alive when paired with Mexican spiciness! 🍉🌶️
I didn’t think anything would beat my love for the original Pulparindo, but the watermelon flavor is simply delicious. It’s just as spicy as the original, but with even more flavor!
Final Pulparindo Thoughts🏅
If you love sweet or spicy flavors, Pulparindo is the candy for you! I really enjoyed all four of the flavors, and I would happily purchase any of them to snack on throughout the week!
