Today I'll be reviewing the 2022 "Best Beauty Buy" winner Gel-X Nails!
Gel-X is a product, perhaps the most recognizable product, of the beauty brand Aprés Nail. Founded in 2015 by Carol Ma and award-winning nail artist Albee Chen, Aprés Nail strives to minimize the wasteful trend-forward fast fashion attitude toward nail design and instead shift the industry towards sustainable consumption practices. 💅
Aprés Nail products are used by celebrity nail artists, top nail salons, and individuals seeking the finest innovation in nails. I tried out one of their Gel-X nail designs and spill the tea on my honest review in the guide below.
Keep reading to learn more about Gel-X nails and if they're worth the hype!
💅What Is Gel-X Nails?
Gel-X Nails is so proprietary that it is now trademarked by Aprés Nail. Aprés Nail defines Gel-X as the world's very first soft gel nail extension system. The system was invented as a solution to the harmful and wasteful effects of traditional gel manicures. 💚
The Gel-X system is a quick and painless application process that can be completed by an individual or professional. There are two primary products in the Gel-X Nails Extension System kit. 💅
The first is the soft gel Gel-X tips, which are composed of a soft translucent gel in the shape of a nail. The second is the Extend gel, which is manufactured from proprietary soft gel formulations that make nail removal a breeze. Instead of the traditional aggressive removal process, these Gel-X nails are easily soaked off in warm water.
💚There is no need for filling or dust and odors of traditional nail application techniques. Because of the ease in removal, there is no damage to natural nails, which is usually the result of intense buffing! Gel-X is a much healthier alternative to regular gel nails and acrylics.
💅My First Experience with Gel-X Nails
When it comes to my nails, I've only ever had acrylics, for as long as I can remember! When the pandemic hit and my nail salon shut down, I started rocking the natural look. But I was missing the length of my acrylics and looking for an alternative!
I heard a lot of good things about Gel-X nails and after watching a few Gel-X nail videos on YouTube, I knew I had to give them a try. Here is what I thought once I did!
First off, as someone who tries to stick to natural or safer chemical formulations, I LOVED 💅 that these don't require any harsh chemicals to apply. Despite that, you still get the long-wear and durability out of these nails, without all the bad stuff. There are none of those toxic fumes and strong odors with traditional nail polish.
This also means there is no need to do a damaging buff before and after applying the nails like with my typical acrylics and gels. When I was wearing natural nails during the pandemic, I grew to like them when they were finally *healthy* so even though I use Gel-X now, I want to maintain the health of my natural nail. ❤
When I removed my first Gel-X nails, it was visibly apparent just how much healthier and stronger my nails were. Many Gel-X reviewers and salon experts online attest to the same thing! There is a hugely noticeable difference when going from acrylic tips to the Gel-X Nail Extension System.
When I get acrylics, I need to soak, file, buff, drill, and more. This all took a toll on my hand and nail health. After a whole month with my Gel-X kit, all I had to do to remove them was soak my fingernails in acetone for a few minutes and the tips literally dissolved away. It's pretty cool!💅
Even with the easiest removal process, these nails do not budge. You don't have to worry about one popping off or them getting damaged. You can resume your normal lifestyle and enjoy your fresh nails!
💅How to Apply Gel-X Nails❤
You can apply Gel-X Nails yourself at home with the full system or go to a local Gel-X certified salon. You can use the salon finder tool on the Aprés Nail website to locate your local Gel-X nail salon as I did.
It'd been a while since I went to the salon so I wanted to treat myself! The process was fast, easy, and painless and I couldn't be happier with the final result of my Gel-X nails. Below is a summary of the Gel-X nails application process:
💅Clean nails with acetone to remove any natural oils
💅Apply the Aprés Nail Gel-X Extended Gel Nail polish to connect the extension
💅Place the gel nail extension at the base of the nail
💅Use an LED light on each nail to make sure the Extended Gel Nail polish dries and the gel nail extension hardens onto the natural nail
💅Once both hands have their full set of gel extensions, I sat with my nails under the LED light to reinforce the gel nail to my natural nail
💅I love that the extensions can be filed into any shape you want. I had the manicurist file my nail extensions into a coffin shape
💅She pressed my cuticles back and buffed the extension of my nails
💅I washed my hands to remove any excess residue from my nails
💅After it was time for some fun Gel-X nails ideas! I wasn't sure what polish I wanted, but I knew I wanted something supernatural so I went for this stunning blush pink
💅She started with a base nail polish coat on all of my nails and followed up with a few coats of the soft pink
💅I dried the polish one more time under the LED light and am so impressed with the final result!
💅The nails are so comfortable and feel much more natural compared to my usual acrylics
I asked the manicurist how to take off Gel- X nails when I'm ready and she said I don't even need to come to the salon as I might with traditional gel and acrylics. They will last four weeks, and then when I'm ready to remove them, all I have to do is soak my nails in some acetone for a few minutes.
She said the gel formula will dissolve on its own in the acetone.
💅Gel-X Nails Reviews and Ranking Criteria💅
When thinking about my nails, there are five key factors I consider. These always help me, and hopefully help you, determine the value of a product.
From my Gel-X experience, I can say that they ticked all of my boxes.
The price of the Gel-X Nail Extension System comes in at $118. Inside you get 500 gel tips, a pH bonder, gel primer, soak off gel, top coat, LED light, file, and a deluxe vegan leather case. Considering everything that comes in this kit, I'd say it's more of a value kit than an expense.
It is true that a professional Gel-X manicure sets you back about $100, but they're also much better for your nails.
The quality of Gel-X is impeccable. There is nothing like these gel tips on the market. They are soft yet durable and long yet comfortable.
💅Ease of Application
The Gel-X application process is super straightforward and I love that they sell everything you need in one kit so you're not running around looking for things. When I had my Gel-X professionally done, the process was seamless.
Gel-X pretty much sells every size tip imaginable. This means you can find your perfect tips and fit. Their nails are also fileable, which means you can customize them even further.
These Gel-X nails are a lot safer than traditional acrylics, which expose you to a lot of chemical odors and dust.
💅Pros and Cons of Gel-X Nails💚
When it comes to the pros and cons of Gel-X nails, I and reviewers alike have nothing but good things to say, except for the higher (but definitely justified) price tag.
Gel-X nails have many pros. They are a gentler alternative to harsh acrylics and regular gel manicures. With acrylics, you get exposed to nasty monomer chemical concoctions that have negative side effects and strong odors.
Gel-X also feels much more natural due to its soft texture. They are still durable, but my hands don't feel weighed down like with acrylics.
The easy removal process is another thing I love about Gel-X, compared to the labor-intensive and damaging acrylic removal process.
The average cost of a Gel-X manicure is $100-$150, which comes to about $25/week for those nails, as Gel-X lasts four weeks. An acrylic manicure usually costs about $40 and lasts six weeks, and a regular manicure- only about $20 with two weeks of wear.
The only other potential downside is that if the application is not done correctly, there's a chance that a gel nail might pop off in the first few days. That is why it is vital to follow proper nail prep steps before application.
💅Grading the Gel-X Competition
The reason Gel-X is doing so well is that there isn't anything like it on the market. Aprés Nail identified all of the pain points women face when getting a manicure and addressed them head-on.
Traditional gel manicures are damaging to the nails and overall health with toxic fumes. Acrylics are also horrible to the nail and often feel unnatural and impractical.
I was tired of both of these options but craved length that I just couldn't get from my natural nails. That is when I discovered Gel-X Nails. After trying Gel-X and seeing that they do indeed last four weeks, I've been blown away!
A normal gel manicure lasts only two weeks, half the time of the Gel-X Systems. Considering that a regular gel manicure is awful for your nails, you're practically doing twice the damage and spending double the money on manicures!
Acrylics last six to eight weeks, but you still need to get a fill every two to three weeks. With Gel-X there is no need for fills.
It's hard to even call the three options below competitors as there is nothing else like my Gel-X nails, but I wanted to explore some of the alternatives and dupes out there. My findings reveal that Gel-X is still superior.
Kiara Sky Gelly Tips - $110
These are the closest Gel-X competitors. The Sky Gelly Tips retail at $109.99. This kit doesn't come with a few things like the file and soak that come in the Gel-X kit.
💅Many shapes and sizes available
💅Only last three weeks
The Gel-X nails have one whole week's worth of more wear, which is a huge plus!
Beetles’ Nail Tips and Glue Gel Kit - $20
This $20 Amazon kit considers itself a "dupe" for Gel-X. However, like all things that seem too good to be true, they usually are.
💅Causes damage to nail bed
💅Many reviewers said they don't stay put
💅Some got allergic reactions
Glamnetic Nails - $15
These award-winning reusable nails are all the rage. But they are much more limiting in their wear.
💅Average price $15-$20
💅Pre-defined shapes and designs
💅Need to use harsh nail glue
💅Are Gel-X Nails Worth It?❤
After my first experience with Gel-X nails, I can confidently agree that they are worth all of the hype. They surpassed my expectations and I am so pleased with the final result of my manicure.
Some of my favorite aspects of Gel-X nails are:
💅It's less damaging to your natural nail, which means you can go au natural whenever you need to
💅Fun application process that can be done at home or at a salon
💅Customizable nail shape unlike acrylics or the limitations of your natural nail
💅Ability to choose any polish or create any nail design
💅Super-simple removal process at home that is painless and non-damaging
❤Gel-X impressed me because it was clearly better for my health and gave me some of the best-looking nails I've had in my life. There is no compromise. With Gel-X, I feel I can have the same perfect manicure with a healthier, safer process.💚
💅I’m a Nail Junkie and I Only Trust Gel-X Nails
I'm practically a professional manicure consumer. I love getting my nails done, so I have a lot of experience under my belt. I've tried many acrylics, gels, press-on, and more. Gel-X stood out to me and is now my favorite way to get my nails done. 💅
They are worth every penny, especially because I see these nails as a self-care investment. They're better for me and the planet which I love, but they still have the nails on fleek capabilities! ❤
